My mom is just coming up on 1 month post-op and the insurance already paid everything. She got a list of everything they paid and how much....  $ 65,000!!!!! And the insurance paid it all!!! I couldnt believe how much it was.. No wonder why the insurance is now being ******** about approving me!  Wow.....

what's even more incredible is that WLS is the CHEAPER path for them to send you down...The assumption is that obesity costs significantly more to treat later on....crazy huh? I've got my fingers crossed for ya! xxxBecca

I think your mom may be looking at what the insurance was billed - not what the insurance was actucally paid - typically the hospital bills very high but they only get paid according to their contract with the insurance company which is much less. When I had surgery my insurance was billed almost 30,000$ and they paid less than 10,000$ to all the diffferent providers.

First visit to surgeon - 288 ~ bmi 45.1
2 week pre-op 252 ~ bmi 39.5
Total lost - 153 Since surgery - 117!
Goal weight - 155 (mine) 180 (surgeons)
Current weight - 135 (2020 I lost 10lbs due to dedicating myself to working out more and being in better shape)

1/14/2025 still maintaining 135 :-)

Extended TT, lipo, fat injections - 11/2011

BA/BL/Arm Lift - 7/2014

Scar revision on arms - 3/2015

HALO laser on arms/neck 9/2016

Thigh Lift 10/2020

Thigh Lift revision 10/2021

It is amazing.  The final count for my WLS was something like $32,000 (I paid $200) and like Jennifer, my insurance didn't pay $32,000.  They generally get discounts and whatnot, but still, that is a lot of money.

Its crazy right? I looked at the bill again and you were right.. It did all cost $ 65,000, but with the discounted rate it was still $42,000!

That actually irritates the crap out of me. Big insurance companies shouldn't be getting those discounts...people without insurance should get those discounts. I was in a car accident last year and broke my hip, insurance was billed almost 15,000...then they got almost $14,000 in deductions!

omg I could go on and on about corporate tax breaks, special discounts and the old fashion rich get richer type crap but just realized I hijacked the thread and moved it OT.

*steps off pedistal*

sorry!
